The basic types of wear and the forms, hazards and measures of wear in rolling bearings

Wear is divided into three processes

1. Running in stage: the new parts are generally in this stage when they are just put into use, and the wear rate is high.

2. Stable wear stage: during the normal use stage, the wear rate is stable and low.

3. Severe wear stage: when the parts are about to be scrapped, the wear rate increases sharply.

Basic types of wear:

1. Abrasive wear: also referred to as wear, external hard particles or hard protuberances on the friction surface cause the surface material to fall off during friction. (the condition to obtain higher wear life is that the surface hardness of the material is less than 1.3 times of the abrasive hardness).

2. Adhesive wear: also known as scuffing: When the profile peak of friction surface occurs "cold welding" due to the instantaneous temperature rise and pressure at each point of interaction, the material migrates from one surface to another during relative movement, which forms adhesive wear, and in serious cases, it will cause the moving pair to bite.

3. Fatigue wear: also known as pitting corrosion: is the mechanical wear caused by material fatigue caused by repeated deformation of micro volume of friction surface under the action of alternating friction.

4. Erosion wear: mechanical wear caused by hard objects or hard particles entrained in flowing liquid or gas impacting the surface of parts.

5.Corrosive wear: the corrosion caused by the chemical or electrochemical action of the environment where the friction surface material is located. The wear caused by the relative movement of the friction pair is corrosion wear.

6. Fretting wear: if the two contact surfaces are relatively static macroscopically, but under the influence of environment, they move relative to each other with amplitude less than 100 μ m, such contact surfaces will also wear, which is called fretting wear or fretting corrosion wear. It is a kind of composite wear.

Wear forms in rolling bearings

a. Adhesive wear: in the case of poor lubrication, the relative moving friction surface has adhesive wear and even surface burn

b. Abrasive wear: the sealing is not tight, the external dust and sand particles enter the mechanical impurities in the bearing lubricant, and the bearing is not cleaned thoroughly, which causes abrasive wear

c. Corrosive wear: corrosion and wear will occur when moisture, water and acid or alkali solution invade the bearing

d. Fretting wear: bearing does not rotate, long-term in the state of small vibration contact surface wear, may appear wear marks, accompanied by rust powder

e. Fatigue wear: fatigue spalling

harm:

(1) Make the working surface rough;

(2) Vibration and noise increase;

(3) The inner clearance of bearing increases;

(4) The rotation accuracy decreases;

(5) The friction torque increases

The main measures to reduce wear are as follows

Keep the lubricant in good condition

Reduce friction

Good sealing to prevent foreign matters from entering
